Well, that was a thing. From the onset, we had a pretty good idea that the Season Kickoff 2023 was going to be a little different than what might normally be expected of professional League of Legends. What we saw went a couple steps beyond that. This felt like something more akin to an old LoLesports April Fools broadcast. URFitational, anyone? Somehow the bits are funnier when your region is competitive.

Team Zoomers vs. Team Boomers Take It To Bronze Scrapes

This year's season kickoff saw every team in every region send a player to compete. Unfortunately, there will be no international competition, and instead, the event functions more like an all star game. The ten players from the LCS were split into Team Zoomer and Team Boomer, with some of the old guard taking on the young up and comers. In addition, no bans were allowed and every champion could only be played once in the series.

Team Boomers stormed out the gate in game one, scaling into an insurmountable lead, while Team Zoomers powered back in the second game of the series to force a decisive game three. With Twitch chat calling it scripted and shouts of "Bronze Scrapes," the teams took the stage once more. Team Zoomers was able to hang on and power through to a victory. For their win, the five teams they represent, which will each be able to create an emote with Riot Developers to be put into the game.

Is it the Regular Season yet?

It's important to remember that League of Legends is, in theory, a game that should be fun to play. And esports, as a whole, are kind of insane when you really think about it. And to that end, there is definitely room for events that are just for fun. Where there are no real stakes that matter and the players can showcase some of who they are as people when they're not competing at the highest level.

But one can't help but feel for Spica, freshly back from Korea as FlyQuest boot camped abroad. They're clearly ready and raring to go, and with an entire region of fans eagerly wanting to see more success out of the LCS this year, this event felt a little out of place. In future years, it might be better served to run something like this after MSI with teams that didn't qualify.

Levity absolutely has a place in the LoL Esports space, but North America is ready to see what we've got this year. Unfortunately, we're no closer to knowing just yet. The regular season kicks off Thursday, January 26th, at 3 PM EST!
