Over $5K Worth of Disney Lorcana Products Stolen From Florida Shop

Trading card theft is on the rise with a local shop recently getting hit for Lorcana cards

Some trading card game enthusiasts couldn’t handle the prices of Disney Lorcana and have decided it’s better to just steal Disney and Pokémon cards from a shop in Florida — where else.

Earlier this week, Decks & Dice Tournament Center, located in Lakeland, Florida, reported that over $5,000 worth of TCG products were stolen. Late Wednesday night when the store was closed, someone broke the glass on the front door, snuck in, and snagged sealed products.

“We had Obsidian Flame booster boxes, they took all of them," said owner Chad Rippey in the report. "Build and battles and booster bundles, they took all of those as well."

A detailed inventory has been given to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Rippey said on Facebook. This included new Disney Lorcana product, which the store planned on using for in-store tournaments.

“We didn’t know how bad it would be. Obviously, they could have cleaned us out of everything, which would have been devastating. I mean, we were frustrated, angry, mad,” Rippey said to a local news station.

It’s unfortunate what happened to Decks & Dice and it’s currently unclear who the culprit is and what their true reasoning was behind the theft.

Card Shops Under Fire For Inflating Disney Lorcana Card Prices

Disney Lorcana’s prices for boosters and pre-made decks are officially a lot higher than they are for games like Magic and Pokémon. This could be due to the hype of the game being just released this month for the first time.

The situation has not been made any better, however, thanks to local stores increasing the prices significantly upon launch and the week that followed. Not many stores were given Disney Lorcana cards and the high demand for the slightly scarce product most likely added to the inflation, but the TCG community is not happy.

For example, booster packs are worth $5.99, but many stores are selling them for upwards of $15. Starter decks are worth $16.99 but are being sold at local shops for $40. Treasure Troves are priced at $49.99 by Ravensburger but can be found for up to $180 at some stores. You get the idea.

Even online, at trusted websites like TCGPlayer, you’ll see that a lot of singles are being sold for well over the price that is recommended by MSRP.

This has all caused a big uproar in the trading card community, with many feeling up in arms about the local stores’ decision to take advantage of customers. But some TCG enthusiasts have noted that this is quite common for basically the initial release of any game.

“This almost always happens with new card games that become popular,” one guy wrote on Reddit. “Even more so with a game as good as Lorcana and in collaboration with Disney. Be patient. Prices will come down and they will print more product.”
