The big question that every fan of the Borderlands franchise has on their mind is whether or not this movie will be a success or a flop. Gamers have been given a taste of the good life with a handful of successful gaming adaptations at the theater and on home streaming services. Movies like Mario and Sonic have shown that video games can be adapted well, while shows such as The Last Of Us prove they can also appeal to a mainstream audience without any context of the original game.

The Borderlands Movie’s Star Studded Cast

Eli Roth and his rag-tag crew of A-List actors and comedians will still be put on a pedestal and judge harshly. When it comes to video game adaptations they’re normally loved or hated with little to no in-between. When it comes to Borderlands, it has a very unique blend of comedy and action laced with satire and heart. It’s a combination with a specific brand of audience in mind that fails to land even for some gamers.

Well there is no doubt that the likes of Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis have the chops to play any role, and Kevin Hart and Jack Black know how to get laughs out of an audience, can they thread the needle on Borderlands unique type of humor?

The casting of the movie also includes Arianna Greenblatt (Barbie, Love and Monsters) and Florian Munteanu (Creed II, Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings). In the new images released for the movie, every character looks like they were lifted off the screen and pasted into real life. Something not every video game movie gets right on the first try. This is a good start for some gamers as it shows that Eli Roth is paying attention and showing some respect for the source material.

One of the biggest points of contention lies with Kevin Hart as Roland, the leader of the Crimson Lance Mercenaries. He’s tall, (sorry, Kevin!) muscular and you’re de facto tough guy-type. Not to state the obvious, but it’s the type of character you’d expect someone like The Rock to portray. He has a commanding, low voice that doesn’t tend to be associated with Hart’s role.

With the Borderlands Movie releasing in August on Friday the 9th, fans have a little under half a year to see the results. The first release of the promo stills paint a convincing picture, the actors look the part, even Kevin. But it’s a small sample size and until the first trailer releases, it’s all fans have to go on.
