LCS Names MarkZ New Commissioner
Riot Games has named a new commissioner for the League Championship Series. Mark “MarkZ” Zimmerman will oversee the premiere North American League of Legends esports circuit for the 2024 season, returning to a weekend broadcast after moving to a weekday schedule in 2023.
MarkZ has over a decade of experience in the North American LoL esports scene. In that time, he has worked as an analyst, coach, content creator, caster, and producer within the LCS ecosystem.
Who is the LCS Commissioner?
MarkZ is the third commissioner in the LCS’ decade-plus-long history. Chris Greeley held the position until 2022 when he was promoted to Global Head of Strategy for League of Legends Esports, which saw Jackie Felling take over. Felling stepped down this past summer — only a year and a half into her tenure as commissioner — to focus on recovering from health-related complications.
“For almost a decade, I have devoted my career to the LCS, and it is with immense honor that I undertake the responsibility of representing the fans, players, teams, and partners in my new position as the Commissioner of the LCS,” MarkZ said in a press release by Riot Games. “As I step into this new role, I am committed to exploring new and innovative ways to create the best viewing experiences for fans, and inspire our community so that our sport can be celebrated for generations to come.”
The 12th season of the LCS kicks off on Saturday, January 20, 2024. The 2023 broadcast schedule saw a majority of games held on Thursday and Friday — one for the key factors in a decline in viewership for the league throughout the season.
