Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is hitting the streets and fighting game fans are speaking highly of the massive update. But unlike many of its contemporaries, GBVS:R is also offering a free-to-play version alongside its retail release. The free version does have some serious limits on what you can do. So here’s what’s included in the F2P version if you don’t want to shell out the cash quite yet.
Free Character Rotation
GBVS:R is releasing with 28 characters at launch, but only 4 of them will be available for you if you get the free version. The main character, Gran, will always be selectable but the other three will rotate between the rest of the cast weekly. This means that unless you get the full version, you’ll only have a few days at a time to learn a character. Those who play MOBA’s like DOTA2 or League of Legends will be familiar with this system. To start off launch week, you can play as Gran, Djeeta, Zeta and Sigfried. All of which are considered some of the easiest characters to play. As it stands, currently there’s no way to unlock additional characters without purchasing the game at full price.
Limits On Game Modes
At the end of the day, the lifeblood of a modern fighting game is online play. And with the free version, you’ll be able to compete in the two most critical elements of that — Ranked and Casual. However, there are also limits on that as well. Unlike the retail version, you won’t be able to make custom rooms and invite your friends to them. So that means you’ll be forced into fighting strangers online.
Also, if you’re interested in the story mode of Rising you’ll only be able to play Act 1 with the free version. And given the mobile game’s massive world, having only the first act is just a taste of what the single-player experience has to offer. So those solo warriors looking to experience the world of Granblue will have to eventually purchase the whole game.
Granblue Fall Guys
With that said you can still experience one of the more unique aspects of the GBVS:R which is the Fall Guys-esque “Gran Bruise Legends!”. This series of minigames provides a chill change of pace from the intense 1v1 action of a fighting game. However, you’ll be limited with how much you can customize your Avatar for this mode if you’re only on the free version. So if having your digital self look as cool as possible is your jam, then the free game will leave you feeling limited.
