Counter-Strike 2 was finally announced by Valve on March 22nd, and this ended years of speculation around the game’s existence. With a release scheduled for this Summer, fans are excited to get their hands on the new and improved Counter-Strike experience. The limited beta has also started to roll out, and we saw our first look at competitive gameplay in a show match before the ESL Pro League Season 17 Grand Final last weekend.

Counter-Strike 2’s First Major Announced

Today, PGL Announced that they will be hosting the first CS2 Major in 2024 in Copenhagen, Denmark. From March 17 - 31, 2024, the PGL CS2 Major will be hosted in the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, bringing together the top 24 Counter-Strike 2 teams to battle for a prize pool of $1.25M. This is not only the first CS2 Major, but also the first Counter-Strike Major ever held in Denmark, a country that has deep roots in the Counter-Strike scene. Valve also announced that the upcoming Blast Paris Major will be the final CS:GO Major to be held, as we begin the transition to Counter-Strike 2 ahead of its upcoming release in the summer.

“One of the greatest games of all time is marching to another chapter, and we couldn't be happier to host probably the most important Major of the franchise in recent years. Denmark has a rich esports heritage, and we are excited to bring the world's best Counter-Strike teams to Copenhagen to compete for the game's most prestigious title.”, said PGL CEO Silviu Stroie, “Our ambition for PGL CS2 Major Copenhagen 2024 is to break the game's all-time viewership records.”

PGL has hosted Counter-Strike Major’s in the past, and in fact the PGL Major Stockholm in 2021 was the most watched CS:GO tournament of all time. PGL Major Antwerp in 2022 was also the largest indoor esports event ever, bringing over 20,000 fans through the door. This will be PGL’s fourth Major overall, and given that they have been chosen to host the first ever CS2 Major shows Valve’s faith in the Romanian tournament organisers. With a track record like this, we can expect PGL Major Copenhagen to be bigger and better than ever to kick off Counter-Strike 2’s competitive career.
