Apex Legends Gun Run Guide — How to Win

Want to shock your friends with your Gun Run skills? Get all the info you need to dominate

Gun Run is a classic FPS staple that first appeared in Counter-Strike 1.6. It has since made its way to Apex Legends on and off. It’s currently a game mode in the battle royale and we are here to tell you how to play.

Gun Game is a simple game mode where you all start with the same weapon and work your way through a set list of weapons until you get to a melee weapon. You move to the next weapon each time you get a kill. You then need to be the first to get a kill with the melee weapon in order to win the game.

In Apex Legends, you play Gun Game as a team. This means the progression works differently than in a classic Gun Game. In Apex Legends’ version, you will jump to the level after whatever is the highest level a teammate has reached. For example, if a teammate is at level 8, you will jump to the level 9 weapon if you get a kill, even if you are on level 3.

Apex Legends Gun Run Levels

In Apex Legends, the weapons are ordered by the type of gun they are. Here is the order you will race up the list as your team gets kills:

  • Assault rifles
  • LMGs
  • SMGs
  • Shotguns
  • Marksman weapons
  • Snipers
  • Pistols
  • Throwing knife

The throwing knife is the 25th level. Once someone on your team gets a kill with this melee weapon, you win.

Apex Legends Gun Run Tips and Tricks

While the original version of Gun Run has all players fending for themselves, the Apex Legends variation has more of a focus on communication and teamwork. Instead of trying to rack up kills, you’ll want to coordinate with teammates to climb up the ranks as fast as you can.

For example, if you’re on a weapon you aren’t great with, group up with one of your teammates to assist them in getting kills. This will help get to the next level faster instead of roaming on your own. You also don’t want to “feed” the other team, giving them easy kills while you meander around the map.

Always be aware of your surroundings. You never want to leave yourself open, allowing enemies to rack up kills and subsequently shoot up the levels. Check corners and don’t stand out in the open. You should also keep a lookout for opportunities to third-party when you see two other teams distracted with one another. This is especially tantalizing when you’re using long-range weapons.

Remember that the throwing knife can do 250 damage when you get a headshot. This means it’s a one-hit KO if you have calculated aim. Try to out-maneuver your enemies by taking the high ground or camping with unexpected angles so you can avoid getting shot while struggling with a melee.
