Apex Legends x Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Crossover

Apex Legends is getting a Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Crossover Event on January 6th, but what should players expect from it?

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Crosses Over with Apex Legends

  • Apex Legends has an upcoming crossover event with Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
  • The Apex Legends x Final Fantasy VII Rebirth event starts on January 6th, 2024.
  • Three confirmed skins include Crypto as Cloud Strife, Wraith as Tifa Lockheart and Horizon as Aerith Gainsborough.

In a major surprise for Apex Legends fans, a new crossover event has been announced in partnership with Square Enix as a promotion for the next installment of their Final Fantasy VII Remake franchise, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The Apex Legends x Final Fantasy VII Rebirth event will be released on January 6th, 2024.

Apex Legends x Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Posted via Twitter, the 41-second clip features a voiceover from Horizon, “What we’ve done, that's set in stone. Or so they’ll tell ya, dearie. Because the future has the power to change anything, even the past.”

As the Horizon speaks we see the camera trailing over an open sky with a black feather, normally associated with Final Fantasy 7’s main villain, Sephiroth, floating around.

Horizon, Crypto and Wraith are all investigating a mysterious, massive buster sword. But when Crypto picks it up he’s charged with power and swings it about just like the main protagonist Cloud Strife in Final Fantasy 7.

The trailer doesn’t give us much more than that except that the art at the end of the trailer that says the Apex Legends x Final Fantasy VII Rebirth event is coming on January 6th also reveals at least three skins.

  • Horizon as Tifa Lockheart
  • Wraith as Vincent Valentine

What Is the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Event?

Apex Legends normally has two types of go-to events, their collection events which feature the addition of mythic-level cosmetics such as an Heirloom weapon or a Prestige skin. And the other type of ‘event’ is just a store sale. Since the Uprising Collection Event featuring Loba’s Prestige Skin, Apex Lycanthrope, is wrapping up on January 2nd, the likelihood of this being an entire Collection Event with 24 cosmetics is very low.

What players should be expecting is just a store sale since this is just a promotion for Square Enix’s upcoming Final Fantasy VII Rebirth which releases on February 29th, 2024.

If players are to expect just a store sale, will there be any more skins than the three we see in the trailer? The answer is a tentative maybe…store sales usually feature anywhere between 3 to 5 new skins for Legends and some weapon skins.

At the bare minimum, expect Crypto as Cloud, Wraith as Tifa and Horizon as Aerith skins along with a few, or a bundle of Apex Loot Packs. Players might even get lucky and there could be three versions of the bundle; one for just the skins and a couple of packs, one with a Skin and a Weapon skin and some packs, and one with both skins and a lot of Apex Packs.

Other Apex Legends x Final Fantasy 7 Crossover Skins

Popular Apex Legends Content Creator Thordan Smash posted a video analyzing the cross-over trailer and in it, he mentions that a source told him there may actually be another three iconic skins. They even go so far as to name them as belonging to Newcastle, Valkyrie and Wattson.

So who or what could inspire three more Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth-related skins in Apex Legends? Here are our guesses:

Chocobo x Wattson

We’d love to see Wattson as a Chocobo, or at least inspired by one. She’s already gone all in on Nessie and their cuddliness. Give us a Wattson skin where she rocks a Chocobo Hoodie! There are no other major characters that line up with Wattson except maybe Jessie...but we all know how that turned out.

Barrett x Newcastle

It seems like low hanging fruit to make Newcastle a Barret skin, but they're both big dudes with the drive and determination to get the job done. They're also both protectors and will do anything to protect the ones they love. Don't expect Newcastle to be sporting a gun-arm though, he needs to wield his shield and his firearm of choice.

Sephiroth x Valkyrie

This one might seem a bit out there, but you can't have a Final Fantasy VII crossover event with anything and not include the One-Winged Angel himself. Plus, none of the Legends really match up with Sephiroth's vibes in a 1 to 1 way. But Valkyrie may be the closest when we think about her being able to fly.

The skin may not be a one-to-one adaptation of her as Sephiroth, but a One-Winged Angel take on her skin would be very cool.
